Chipolte & Jalapeno

The 411 Over the years we have seen a more Latin inspired brunch theme with different restaurants. With what seems to be a slow but steady growth, Mexican and South American restaurants are popping up offering some really tasty food and introducing a tasty brunch option to their menus. When we heard that there was this little place in the village that was serving Mexican brunch we were excited to see what our taste buds would experience.

Atelier D’argentine

The 411 Atelier Argentine is a relatively new place opening in the old location of DNA. I had heard of it from a friend of mine who had dinner there and saw that they served brunch. He enjoyed the dinner so we decided to try out their brunch and see what it would be like.

Maison Publique

The 411 Lots of buzz has been building over the last little while with the opening of Maison publique – a project coming from a team of famed Montreal Chef Derek Dammann (who brought us DNA) and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The concept is a British gastro pub which, although may make one think of a dingy pub, is intended to be a more laid back resto with a pub style feel to it. With all these new openings we always have to revert to divine intervention in order to have them offer brunch on the menu, but we were blessed by these culinary heavyweights and they do offer a weekend brunch so all of us brunch lovers can get a chance to sample a brunch inspired by this new Montreal concept .

Queen Mary

The 411 Off of decarie, on Queen Mary, is an old neighbourhood that has been undergoing some changes. The area is gentrifying so that means old buildings disappear and new condos show up – whether this is a good thing or not is another discussion but I’m just here to talk brunch and breakfast. My friend moved there recently and has been going to this little spot called restaurant Queen Mary. Right off the bat, she told me that it’s more of a greasy spoon than the places I go to but that doesn’t mean I haven’t reviewed a greasy spoon nor am I opposed to reviewing them. The greasy spoon often gets a bad rep but it serves a vital purpose of providing filling food, quickly and on the cheap end. You can settle up to the counter to order your dish, down it with some coffee and then pay $5 and be full. Lets keep in mind most brunches can in some cases come close to $20 when you factor in your dish, coffee, taxes and tip.

Nouveau Palais

The 411 Bernard street used to be my favourite spot when I began doing reviews; you had an impressive concentration of places that served up brunch mainly west of Parc street. I used to love it but fell out of love over the last few years as I started seeing other streets and neighbourhoods. However, recently I heard some buzz circling back in the Mile End and have made my way back and to be honest the street looks good with some new spots and Nouveau Palais is one of them.

Midi 6

The 411It’s been a while since we have been to the Atwater market area. There are a few brunch spots in the area which we explored a while ago, and now we got wind of a place called Midi 6 that was worth checking out. I should note that calling this the Atwater market area is wrong because it should be called St Henri: a growing and developing area where people are curious to explore new spots.

Crudessence

The 411It’s been a while since we have done a vegan brunch review – the main reason being that there aren’t too many vegan brunches available in Montreal. In essence, brunch menus can be vegetarian friendly but to go one step further and make it vegan friendly is more difficult. Vegans need to avoid dairy and eggs, not to mention all meat. You can drop meat from a dish but eggs and dairy become much more difficult to substitute especially for brunch, so if you are a vegan and love brunch then you do not have many options available to you. Making brunch vegan is also tricky because you must be creative. Putting fruit on a plate and some granola on the side is technically vegan but it isn’t creative and over the years I have discovered that you can do many things to brunch to substitute non-vegan items. I have had some amazing dishes using substitutes like almond milk or tofu for bacon. When I heard that crudessence was offering brunch I felt it was a much needed addition to add to our not-so-long vegan brunch list.

Pastaga

The 411I have recently tried to make more of push to showcase some of the more Foodie brunch spots. In our search for the best brunches of Montreal, we have eaten our way though almost 200 brunches. We have seen many ranging from your classic eggs and bacon greasy spoon to those fancy ones that are a little more lunch than brunch. Pastaga come on our radar because of a blogger I follow who has written a few posts on it. If you haven’t had a chance to check out willtravelforfood.com then please do so and you will find some really interesting write ups on stuff that makes foodies drool. With that said, Pastaga is a foodie spot, no doubt about it. I have my preconceived notions on these in that I know I can expect something different; usually, a menu that will never really be the same, interesting ingredients and something creative. So with that in mind, I called one of my most adventurous foodie friends and we went to put our two cents on it.

The Paramount

The 411 On a recent trip to Boston we went out searching for some brunch spots. One spot was a suggestion from a friend who said we needed to check out Paramount. Apparently, this institution has been serving up morning delights since 1937 – yes, that’s right, 1937. In my books, we call that an institution. What makes Paramount interesting besides the food and it’s history is that they have a system that they advertise quite well where you wait in line and by the time you get to place your order and get your food your spot is available to you to sit down. Even if you are a group of 10, like we were, they make it happen. In fact, their sign even says not to save any spots and that it has been working well since 1937. No joke, we got our table along with everyone else. The only downside to this is that the line up moved slowly and we ended up waiting for 45 minutes but we did get to see our food being made as we waited.

Rôtisserie Laurier BBQ

The 411 You may have heard about Laurier BBQ over the last year as the historic Montreal restaurant that worked with celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey to give one of the most hyped renovations in Montreal’s restaurant scene. The relations with the celebrity chef have since ended but did you know that Laurier BBQ now offers a brunch menu? This made us very curious – a place that was quite popular and known for BBQ chicken is now doing brunch? Part of me was intrigued to try it since I never have and the other part of me wanted to see how you marry rotisserie chicken and brunch since you rarely see something like this.
