The 411 Over the last little while, Montreal has offered some Vegan and Gluten free menus. It’s a slow trend in general and for brunch, it’s even slower. Often people have difficulty seeing brunch without eggs or bread. There’s lots of dishes without meat but to be vegan and or gluten free is tricky. Also, to be clear – just because something is vegan does not make it gluten free and visa-versa. And there are some people who are both. So, where do you go if you want brunch and it has to be either something vegan or gluten free or both? Well, La Lumiere du Mile end is that place.

The 411 Over the almost 5 years that I have been blogging, I have been surprised by a few things in terms of brunch and one is how well South American cuisine can be adapted to brunch. More so than simply my recent love for huevos rancheros but rather the discovery that chefs can creatively marry the South American cooking style with brunch.

Chaque année, nous attendons un événement avec impatience : la sortie à la cabane à sucre Pied de cochon. Obtenir des réservations ici prend de la patience, de la chance, et une intervention divine des dieux de la bouffe. De mon côté, je n’ai pas encore eu de rappel de leur part, mais heureusement pour moi, mon ami a eu plus de chance et m’a invité. Je lui en serai éternellement reconnaissant. The 411 The growth we saw in the Atwater market a few years back has stretched west into Saint Henri. With this growth and expansion, you start seeing new restaurants opening up and serving brunch. Evoo is a rather recent addition to the scene and one weekend I was looking for something brand new, something I hadn’t seen at all and something that can surprise me so Evoo seemed to be like a good option.

Every year we look forward to one event and that is the Pied de cochon Cabane a Sucre. Getting a reservation here takes patience, luck and divine intervention on behalf of the food gods. Now to be clear, I still haven’t gotten my call back from them but, thankfully, my friend did and got the first date so he offered me a spot. For this, I am eternally grateful. The dinner menu is the same as the daytime menu so, with a liberal interpretation, I am adding this to my brunch reviews. (more…)

The 411 Recently I started helping 2 friends start a review blog called Montreal Food Divas. They specialize in dinner but my reward for helping them was a brunch, which is my 2nd favourite form of compensation (cash being my 1st). The challenge was to go somewhere nice that neither of us have been to before. This can get tricky with bloggers since I needed to find a hidden gem that would impress them but at the same time somewhere that would be new for me as well. Fortunately, with over 200 reviews in my stomach, I can get a feeling on what a place will be like without having eaten there. Roy Pendu seemed like it would fit the criteria of being somewhere new with a menu that is little different.

The 411 Sometimes plans change: you have a place you want to go for brunch and something happens and you can’t go, leaving you to scramble to find something close by. Well this happened one Saturday. Our plans to do brunch in Westmount were derailed and with a time constraint as well as having to stay in the area, I was getting depressed. Then my friend told me that Park restaurant on Victoria avenue actually served brunch. If you don’t know Park restaurant, it’s becoming one of the most talked about restaurants in the city. Chef Antonio Park serves up a combination of Korean and Japanese inspired dishes with an emphasis on organic and sustainably farmed ingredients. I always kind of wished that they did brunch then my friend told me she just found out they did and we ran over.

The 411 On the corner of Lambert-Closse and De Maisonneuve is a Montreal institution called Corner Snack Bar or Moes. With breakfast options available all day long, this Montreal time sake is dear to many and many wild and crazy nights have ended up here (or rough morning-after’s have been saved by their filling dishes). If you have ever been out drinking at night and need some food to fill you and recover Moe’s is your go to spot. . The staff in this family business gave us a mini history lesson and explanation as to why some people call it Moe’s. Once up a time over 50 years ago the corner snack bar was owned and operated by a man named Moe. He would later sell it to our waitress’ grandmother and now it is run by another family member. People used to call it Moe’s before but since Moe’s is the name of another restaurant in Montreal it was difficult to use that name so they used corner snack bar even though it is still referred to as Moe’s by many. Araucaria – Mile end day long brunch

The 411 The breakfast sandwich is a growing trend that can be found on many brunch menus across Montreal. The concept of a breakfast sandwich or a breakfast burger adds a filling option to any brunch menu. In most cases, it’s a matter of hit or miss – meaning, it’s either mediocre or spectacular. So, you can imagine our excitement when we heard that Mbrgr Burger Bar started offering brunch. If you are familiar with Mbrgr, it’s a higher end burger restaurant over on Drummond Street. I’ve been here a few times over the last few years and enjoyed the burgers.

411 At the halfway mark of my Boston trip we went to Cape Cod for some camping and fresh air. Now, just because we are camping does not mean we are missing starting our day with some delicious brunch. So, one morning we drove into town looking for anything legit. Normally, I do research on these things but I didn’t think ahead so we took to the look around and waited for our spider senses to start tingling. It is that approach that brought us to Hearth and Kettle.
