The 411 Over the last little while, Montreal has offered some Vegan and Gluten free menus. It’s a slow trend in general and for brunch, it’s even slower. Often people have difficulty seeing brunch without eggs or bread. There’s lots of dishes without meat but to be vegan and or gluten free is tricky. Also, to be clear – just because something is vegan does not make it gluten free and visa-versa. And there are some people who are both. So, where do you go if you want brunch and it has to be either something vegan or gluten free or both? Well, La Lumiere du Mile end is that place.
At 1st glance Lumiere du Mile End is a small spot on Bernard. It’s already been open a few years and this is the first time I see it after passing by that area countless time. Seating capacity is small but the interior is cozy and has various eclectic items as well as a multicoloured chalkboard menu. There’s a table up front near the door with a large window next to it that is very well lit and offers a view of the street for lazy weekend people walking. If you are seated at this spot do keep in mind that it’s next to the door and in the winter this can get a little bit chilly. The washroom door is particularly cool since it slides on wheels kind of like those old train car doors you see in movies.
Food The brunch menu has 1 item: a weekend brunch dish that is served the Saturday and Sunday then will change the next weekend. The price was $8.75 and coffee was extra. There are other items on the menu that you can order from if you don’t want the brunch but since we are reviewing brunch we will focus on this.
We started off with a café au lait ($3.00) and a smoothie ($4.75). For the coffee we opted to go for almond milk which I am becoming a fan of in some drinks. In this café au lait, however, I felt I should have gone with something thicker like milk. For the smoothie, I had strawberry and opted to add almond milk. This was perfect and it gave that thickness I like and the taste was driven home.
The main dish was the weekend brunch item ($8.75) which was a large plate consisting of Polenta, a black bean patty topped with avocado; kale, tomato, sweet potato, beets and red cabbage. This dish is vegan friendly and is also gluten free. Right off the bat this dish is filling and tasty. We can also add healthy but if you saw the ingredient list, I think you know that already. The kale had this simple light dressing that was made me finish every bite. I didn’t notice the polenta that much as the black beans were more prominent in this dish.
Service The service was good. There is often one person working the cash and tables but because it is so small you can see them at all times so they are just around the corner with a friendly smile.
Vegetarian Finally, I get to use this vegetarian section proudly. Not only is this place vegetarian, it’s vegan and gluten free. There is only one brunch item although there are other items available so you have some choice.
Wrap up I liked La lumiere du Mile End. The food was incredibly tasty and filling. I love that the menu will change from one weekend to another. Even when you factor in the coffee, the dish is budget friendly and fills you up.
