Byla Byla

The 411 Lasalle and Ville-Émard are part of the city where I don’t have too many brunch options listed. I mean, there are a few spots, but they tend to fall into the greasy spoon category. Not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with greasy spoons, but choice is a nice thing to have. So, ‘by choice’ I mean having some greasy spoons, some fancy spots, and some ethnic spots, you know, some kind of variety. So Byla Byla is an interesting option; it’s a sit down restaurant, so not your usual kind of greasy spoon, while also not an exclusive fancy spot, nor is it 100% ethnic.

Le Passé Composé

Le Passé Composé – Grammar was never this yummy

The 411

passe-compose-exterior-950-rue-roy-est-montreal-smallPassé compose has been a name that people have been asking about. It’s a restaurant on Roy street that has some online buzz about being pretty decent. I have been curious about this place and the website did a good job of peaking my curiosity with tasty pictures and interesting menu items posted. In order to satisfy my curiosity and get my brunch fix, a visit to passé compose took place and what I found impressed me.

Chez Nick

Chez Nick – Over 90 years and counting

The 411

chez-nick-exterior-smallFew places in the city have a history to go along with their food but having been around since 1920, Chez Nick has both. This 90 year old institution is the child of a Greek immigrant, Nick Alevisatos, who founded Chez Nicks and over the many years his family has run this institution. Chez Nick is in a spot you would not normally associate with brunch. It is located in Westmount, a mainly residential part of Montreal. I have heard of Chez Nick from various friends and decided that one day after my morning run myself and two friends would check it out and see what this place is all about.

Mesquite (CLOSED)

Mesquite – Down South Cooking in the West End

No Longer Serves Brunch

The 411

mesquite-smallOn the outskirts of NDG bordering Westmount, you will find Mesquite which it can be best described as Southern BBQ with a jazz motif. I am sure you are asking yourself how does one combine down south BBQ and brunch? While both seem to have quite different flavours yet quite tasty in their own way, the idea of them sharing a plate is quite odd. As a result, with this culinary question in my mind, it felt like a good idea to check it out.

Bistro Fruit Folie

Fruit Folie – Bursting with fruit

The 411

Bistro Fruits Folies OutsideSt-Denis is a street where all you need to do is walk a little bit and find a nice gem of a place to eat, and brunch is no exception to this rule. Fruits de Folie falls into this category by providing well priced food and tons of fruit on most of your plates (as the name implies). Although this is my first time coming to Fruits de Folie, I know a lot of people who have spoken about it for quite some time now, and the peer reviews all follow a similar theme of lots of fruit and very affordable. Now since I can’t disagree with those two ideals, off I went exploring.

Bagels Etc

Bagels etc… it’s bagelicious

The 411

Bagels Etc Montreal insideBagels Etc is one of those places that people have been telling me to see for some time but I never get around to checking it out. Those who recommend it are big fans of it, so one nice Sunday, off we went to explore and it did live up to the hype. Bagels etc. has been around since the 1980’s and has made for itself as a great little brunch place that offers more than just bagels. They bang out delicious meals, and do so in a funky and laid back atmosphere. (more…)
