Cabane a Sucre Pied De Cochon Apple Season 2013

pdc 2013 apple season exterior signGuess what time it is? That’s right, it’s the Pied de Cochon Apple cabane à sucre season. That magical time when you get to eat the apple and foie gras inspirations that Chef Martin Picard and the Pied de Cochon team have prepared.

But first, here’s a little background on this magical event for all those who are not familiar with it. The Pied de Cochon restaurant has a cabane à sucre up at 11382 Rang de la Fresnière in St-Benoît de Mirabel (or if your GPS gives you attitude like mine, just Mirabel). Twice a year they have 2 seasons of what can best be described as food orgies. The fall seasons focuses on apples as the inspirational menu items and the winter one focuses on maple syrup. This current season is from the 23rd of August until the 27th of October and reservations for this had to be done well in advanced. In this case it was April 1st so you really need to keep an eye peeled for the invites. (more…)

Homestyle Bakery

homestyle exerior

The 411 Homestyle Bakery and Black Lion Pub is a recent brunch addition to the West Island. Situated in Beaconsfield, this lovely Homestyle and Black Lion Pub sounds like it’s a bakery situated in a pub. Well it’s not, it’s actually a pub and a bakery sharing the same space.

Resonance Café

resonance brunch exterior

The 411 Over the years there have been more and more vegetarian and, in particular, vegan restaurants opening up in Montreal. This was not the case when we started. Finding a vegan spot in general was tricky and even more so a place that did brunch AND was vegan. You could always manage to get a vegetarian option on the menu since not every dish had meat in it so you were ok on that front. Nowadays some minor changes to a menu can allow a restaurant to offer a Gluten free option. Having Buckwheat crepes is one easy way of doing this but there are still many items on the menu that require a little more creativity to make them truly gluten free. So, when we passed by Resonance on Avenue du Parc, we were enticed to see that it was offering both a vegan & gluten free brunch.

La Raclette

The 411 For over 30 years, Restaurant La Raclette has been receiving patrons with its French and Swiss inspired menu. Within the last month or two, Restaurant La Raclette has begun offering a weekend brunch on the menu. When asked why, our waitress said that they wanted the brunch menu to match the dinner menu and respect the restaurant theme. Luckily, we now have a new brunch option a little more east, over on Gilford.

Source Instagram User

Over the last few months, a particular pastry has had the internet abuzz with images of lines going around the block, more than 2 hour long wait time and black market sales. What confectionery delight can cause this? Well, it is the all powerful Cronut. Hailing all the way from the Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York city, this half croissant, half doughnut, a frankenpastry if you will, has got people talking and dreaming of this elusive pastry. So, when we heard that Montreal’s own La Cornetteria, over in little Italy, had come up with their own part croissant, part donught creation, we had to find out more.

Royal Phoenix

The 411 Since I started doing this site, I have fallen in and out of love with Bernard street. When I first started, I felt Bernard was the place to go for brunch then as time passed I discovered new gems hidden in various neighbourhoods. Now, Bernard street was staring to get stale and some of my favourite spots were falling out of favour but some new spots opened up and started doing some interesting things and then, Bernard street started getting interesting again.

La Marmite

The 411 One day while walking down St Denis, I spotted a sign outside saying “Brunch”. To me, this is much like a light house signaling a ship. I meander over, I look at the menu, write down the address and add it to my list of places to review. I wish that weekends were more than two days and I can do brunch all the time but sadly we don’t live in that world so we slowly have to trim down the ever growing list of brunch spots.

Santa Barbara

The 411 I have wanted to go to Santa Barbara for some time now. Something about it made me curious. Situated walking distance from the Jean Talon market, Santa Barbara is in an area that, a few years ago, no one would consider going, but now people have begun exploring and moving there. One day after a morning race, exhausted, dirty and hungry, we made it to Santa Barbara.

Toqué Brunch Festival en Lumiere 2013

Toque Brunch-interior

The 411 For those who may not know, Toqué is one of the city’s most prestigious restaurants. It’s the stuff legends are made of and Normand Laprise is the man
who put it, and the Montreal food scene, on the map. Places like this do not do brunch. I stopped dreaming about brunch being on the menu here years ago, but there is one power in the city so great it can make restaurants dabble in brunch for one glorious day, and that force is Festival Montreal en Lumiere. Over the last few years I have been able to sample some specialty brunches thanks to Festival en Lumiere – places that would never serve brunch offer it for this magical event. So, when I saw that Toqué was doing brunch I had to look twice.
