The 411 Homestyle Bakery and Black Lion Pub is a recent brunch addition to the West Island. Situated in Beaconsfield, this lovely Homestyle and Black Lion Pub sounds like it’s a bakery situated in a pub. Well it’s not, it’s actually a pub and a bakery sharing the same space.
The 411 Every so often I get asked what’s trending in the world of brunch; what’s new, what’s hot, what should we try? I usually reply with: “you tell me”. I’m always looking for something new that’s good. Over the last year I have been to many new places but only a handful impressed me and few have given me that “falling in love” feeling. You see, people get that feeling with other people, I get it with food. I am constantly searching for that magical place that will be my next number 1 go to brunch spot. I have even gotten burnt with some of my loves. I’ve had places close down, menus change, and some places just stopped doing brunch. I travel other countries and cities often looking for brunch love. I still have a few places back home close to my heart, but I want something new, somewhere were it just feels right, somewhere to fall in love all over again. So is Regine Café that place? Well, if I’m writing about it this way, it must have been a great 1st date.
The 411 On the corner of Lambert-Closse and De Maisonneuve is a Montreal institution called Corner Snack Bar or Moes. With breakfast options available all day long, this Montreal time sake is dear to many and many wild and crazy nights have ended up here (or rough morning-after’s have been saved by their filling dishes). If you have ever been out drinking at night and need some food to fill you and recover Moe’s is your go to spot. . The staff in this family business gave us a mini history lesson and explanation as to why some people call it Moe’s. Once up a time over 50 years ago the corner snack bar was owned and operated by a man named Moe. He would later sell it to our waitress’ grandmother and now it is run by another family member. People used to call it Moe’s before but since Moe’s is the name of another restaurant in Montreal it was difficult to use that name so they used corner snack bar even though it is still referred to as Moe’s by many. The 411 Off of decarie, on Queen Mary, is an old neighbourhood that has been undergoing some changes. The area is gentrifying so that means old buildings disappear and new condos show up – whether this is a good thing or not is another discussion but I’m just here to talk brunch and breakfast. My friend moved there recently and has been going to this little spot called restaurant Queen Mary. Right off the bat, she told me that it’s more of a greasy spoon than the places I go to but that doesn’t mean I haven’t reviewed a greasy spoon nor am I opposed to reviewing them. The greasy spoon often gets a bad rep but it serves a vital purpose of providing filling food, quickly and on the cheap end. You can settle up to the counter to order your dish, down it with some coffee and then pay $5 and be full. Lets keep in mind most brunches can in some cases come close to $20 when you factor in your dish, coffee, taxes and tip.
The 411It’s been a while since we have been to the Atwater market area. There are a few brunch spots in the area which we explored a while ago, and now we got wind of a place called Midi 6 that was worth checking out. I should note that calling this the Atwater market area is wrong because it should be called St Henri: a growing and developing area where people are curious to explore new spots.
The 411 On a recent trip to Boston we went out searching for some brunch spots. One spot was a suggestion from a friend who said we needed to check out Paramount. Apparently, this institution has been serving up morning delights since 1937 – yes, that’s right, 1937. In my books, we call that an institution. What makes Paramount interesting besides the food and it’s history is that they have a system that they advertise quite well where you wait in line and by the time you get to place your order and get your food your spot is available to you to sit down. Even if you are a group of 10, like we were, they make it happen. In fact, their sign even says not to save any spots and that it has been working well since 1937. No joke, we got our table along with everyone else. The only downside to this is that the line up moved slowly and we ended up waiting for 45 minutes but we did get to see our food being made as we waited.
The 411 St. Jacques Street isn’t known for brunch, at least besides the legendary and now defunct Picasso. There really aren’t any brunch spots in the area; a bunch of motels, yes, but not exactly an abundance of great places to eat. So when I heard that a breakfast spot opened there, my first question was: next to which motel? My second question was: is it yummy? So, it turns out that I have driven by this place a few times, and not because I have been frequenting the various motels in the area. I must have been subconsciously led to it on account of the giant egg sign. What can I say; I get drawn to these places.
The 411 Lasalle and Ville-Émard are part of the city where I don’t have too many brunch options listed. I mean, there are a few spots, but they tend to fall into the greasy spoon category. Not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with greasy spoons, but choice is a nice thing to have. So, ‘by choice’ I mean having some greasy spoons, some fancy spots, and some ethnic spots, you know, some kind of variety. So Byla Byla is an interesting option; it’s a sit down restaurant, so not your usual kind of greasy spoon, while also not an exclusive fancy spot, nor is it 100% ethnic.
The 411 For some time now I’ve hear about Maamm Bolduc, the buzz about it has been positive, a breakfast spot where you can get your classic breakfast favourites at a decent price, generous portions and with little or no fuss. These spots are a staple feature of the Montreal brunch scene. Not every spot needs to reinvent breakfast; if you do it well for a fair price and make delicious meals then you have a winner. So now it is time to see if M Bolduc comes into this formula.
The 411 The old port has a variety of brunch options, many of which are quite nice. You can find brunch buffets, nice sit down places, some small, and others large. The menus are quite varied and although you will not find many classic style places, you know the eggs and bacon ones simply put, doesn’t really fit. Then comes along the Gros Jambon, which is a lovely little gem in the old port. The menu itself is not a classic bacon and eggs menu, but rather has a twist, it’s kind of like a luncheonette meets small town USA diner with the expected Montreal flair.
